Purpose

The purposes of the PH/HA Section are:

  • to provide a forum for the exchange of information on public health, health administration and policy, health services research, and related issues;
  • to foster public health and health administration libraries;
  • to promote the educational, scientific, and professional growth of public health and health administration librarians and information specialists; and
  • to represent members' interests within the Medical Library Association.

History

First convened in San Antonio, TX in 1974, the group became a Special Interest Group of MLA in 1975 and was given section status in 1980. During its early history, the emphasis was on sharing of ideas and reports on activities of various organizations and libraries, with a Steering Committee consisting of past, present, and the next three incoming chairs. Over the years, as shown in the accompanying documents, the group has evolved in parallel with changes in public health and information technology.
