MLA2008 Reflections
Christine Marton, PH/HA Chair 08/09

The MLA2008 Conference in Chicago Illinois was a wonderful learning and networking experience!

Chicago RiverThe The City of Chicago has outstanding architecture that spans several centuries. Few cities in North America have preserved their historical buildings as thoroughly as Chicago. The conference hotel, the Hyatt Regency Chicago is located in a scenic spot – on the Chicago River as it enters Lake Michigan, offering hotel guests Millennium Parkspectacular views of the water and the downtown area. Nearby is Millennium Park an outdoor entertainment center featuring unusual artistic elements such as Cloud Gate, a stainless steel bean-shaped structure. Walking along Michigan Avenue, in the Magnificent Mile, I noticed many cultural institutions, restaurants and shopping centers. My only regret is the lack of time to visit them.

The MLA conference was full of interesting speakers, meetings, section programs, vendor demos and booths, and social events. Web 2.0 was arguably the most popular topic – the CE course was well attended, keynote speakers, including MLA President Mark Funk, mentioned the collaborative nature of Web 2.0, and the plenary on Web 2.0 tools was one of the highlights of the conference. The PH/HA section program on Web 2.0 was well attended with approximately 120 in attendance. The room was full to capacity! The five speakers gave interesting presentations on various Web 2.0 tools and their use in diverse health library settings – academic, hospital, and public health department. There were many questions from the audience. The following morning, the PH/HA business meeting went smoothly and was well attended, with approximately 30 participants. A big thanks to all who showed up at 7am in the morning!  The Section Shuffle, a new event,Section Shuffle was also well attended, with conference attendees crowding around the creatively decorated section tables and many expressing interest in joining PH/HA. Lisa Wallis and Kay Deeney, aided by the black spider mascot, handled questions about the Core Journal Project and other PH/HA activities. I greatly enjoyed the PH/HA lunch at the wonderful Indian restaurant, Khyber Pass. Thanks to Marcus Banks for organizing this social occasion.

Planning for MLA2009 in Hawai'i is underway. Please contact PH/HA chair-elect Mellanye Lackey at mjlackey@unc.edu with your ideas for the PH/HA section program and participation in the section shuffle.
